The Arrest

It is August 4, 1944. The people in hiding have been confined in the Secret Annex for more than two years. They have hope, because the Allies are advancing. Otto Frank tracks their progress on a map of Normandy. Anne thinks she may be able to go to school again in October. It is around ten thirty in the morning, and Otto Frank is helping Peter van Pels with his English. Suddenly a man with a pistol is standing in Peter’s room. They have been discovered.

Three Dutch police officers search the Secret Annex. An Austrian Nazi is in charge. They are looking for jewelry, money and other valuables. They shake out the contents of a bag so they can fill it with jewelry. The bag contains Anne’s diary and papers. They fall to the ground…

The helpers

The people in the Secret Annex are given a short time to pack a few possessions and then they have to go outside. A police car is waiting there. Two of the helpers, Johannes Kleiman and Victor Kugler, are also arrested, because helping Jews is illegal. Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl are not arrested. Miep claims to know nothing about the people in hiding, and Bep manages to quietly slip away.
