Not safe!

Anne Frank on her tenth birthday. She has a party. Her father takes a photo of Anne (second from left) and her friends. It is her last birthday before the war. Anne’s parents had hoped that they would be free and safe in the Netherlands. But they are not. Hitler and his party want war. Germany has a strong army, and attacks other European countries.

The Netherlands is attacked on May 10, 1940. There is heavy fighting for five days, until German aircraft bomb Rotterdam, the second largest city in the country. This act of terror leads the Dutch army to give up the unequal struggle. The Nazis take control of the Netherlands. Anne’s parents are now afraid that the same things will happen as in Germany. They are right. Discrimination against Jews soon begins. All kinds of things are forbidden for them.

A diary

The Frank family tries to lead as normal a life as possible. Anne’s thirteenth birthday is on June 13, 1942. She gets a lot of presents, including a diary. Anne is really pleased with her gift, and immediately begins to write in it. She writes a lot about her friends and her school, and only a little about the war and the measures taken against the Jews.
