To the Netherlands...

Otto Frank is one of the lucky ones. He finds work in the Netherlands in the summer of 1933. He is going to run a business that makes an ingredient for home-made jam. His company is called Opekta.

The whole family lives in Amsterdam by February 1934,. Anne is then nearly five, and Margot is 8 years old. They quickly make new friends. Some of them are Jewish and, like them, come from Germany. Otto is very busy working and is not home very often. Edith Frank does the housework. She is homesick for Frankfurt, but the family cannot go back.

Not welcome

It is becoming steadily harder for Jewish people to live a normal life in Germany. They are discriminated against by the Nazis. In November 1938, the Nazis destroy hundreds of Jewish shops and synagogues. Thousands of Jews are arrested and thrown in jail. Dozens are killed. Many Jews want to escape from Germany, but they are not welcome in most of the world, including the United States.
