Margot and Anne Frank

Margot Frank is born on 16 February 1926 in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. She is given the middle name Betty. That was the name of Edith Frank's sister who died at the age of sixteen. Annelies Marie (Anne) Frank is born a little over three years later, on 12 June 1929. In the photo Margot is looking at her little sister. Anne is lying in the lap of Kathi, the babysitter.

For Anne and Margot the years in Frankfurt are happy ones. They have lots of friends in the neighbourhood. They adore their grandmother Frank, who also lives in Frankfurt. She is a good storyteller. Grandmother Holländer lives in Aachen, near the Dutch border. Neither of their grandfathers is still alive. Margot goes to a nursery school in Frankfurt, and later to primary school. Twice a week she has lessons in the Jewish religion. Anne is still too young. She will only start school later, in the Netherlands.
