Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka" dive-bombers.
Two of the most famous German fighter aircraft during the Second World War were the Messerschmit and the Junker.

Plans for the Messerschmit 109 were first made in 1934 by Willy Messerschmit. At that time it was the best fighter in the world because of its powerful motor. It had been tested during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Messerschmit was used to escort the heavy Luftwaffe bombers on bombing raids over Britain. During the Battle of Britain its role was to bomb British airfields and to destroy RAF aircraft on the ground.

The Junker Ju87B Stuka was a nose diving bomber whose screaming siren became famous during the Second World War. Unfortunately the aircraft was not very manoeuvrable in the air and was not as fast as other aircraft so the RAF was able to shoot down large numbers of them. For this reason it was quickly decided not to use it during the Battle of Britain.
